True story - I was about 12, had a bird. I have a cake and accidentally left the burner on the Teflon pan on the burner. The smoke from the dying birds. I do not believe that damage was done and normal washing with soap is what I would do. But you may need to fix to get what is causing your furnace that sounds like a timer that goes wrong.
